The idea of this project stems from my time living in Busan, Korea, where the exploration of traditional villages served as a source of inspiration. My objective was to encapsulate the allure of South Korea within a modular environment, juxtaposing its beauty with a dystopian undertone reflective of the pervasive influence of the North Korean regime.

To achieve this vision, I studied the architectural nuances of traditional hanok villages, integrating these elements into the design of the modular environment and accompanying props. The deliberate choice of a dilapidated aesthetic for asset texturing, coupled with the inclusion of graffiti decals featuring images captured during my visit to the DMZ near Seoul, sought to underscore the stark contrast between the vibrant culture of South Korea and the ominous presence across the border.

The colossal orbital cannons featured in the distance symbolize South Korea's vigilant airspace surveillance, a realization that dawned upon me while observing the numerous radar installations and military outposts scattered across the hills of South Korea.

Beyond its visual narrative, this piece aims to convey a deeper message—a testament to the beauty of South Korea intertwined with the shadow of the North Korean totalitarian state. South Korea, with its remarkable people and culture, stands as a testament to resilience and magnificence. I express a hopeful aspiration for the eventual reunification of both nations, envisioning a celebration of their shared history, cultural affinities, and natural splendor.

The desire for peaceful coexistence transcends political differences and resonates with countless individuals on both sides of the border. May this sentiment pave the way for a future where the Korean Peninsula stands united in harmony, avoiding the calamity of war.

All assets except the foliage and small rocks were created from scratch using 3ds Max, ZBrush, Substance Painter and Photoshop.
